Effect of Soil Nutrient Status on Yield and Quality of Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) in YSR District of Andhra Pradesh

The present study was conducted to determine the effect of soil nutrient status on fruit yield and quality of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) in YSR district of Andhra Pradesh, India. To carry out this investigation fifty sweet orange orchards aged between 12 to 13 years were selected and soil samples were collected from these orchards at 0-30 cm and 30-60 cm depth. Majority of the soils of the study area were deficit in available nutrients such as Zn, Fe, N, P and Mn, but Ca, Mg, S, K and Cu were in optimum to high range.

The soil mineral nutrients like N, P and K influenced the fruit weight significantly and positively (r = 0.469**, r = 0.446** and r = 0.415**, respectively), but fruit yield and fruit juice per cent had significant positive relation with soil N (r = 0.519** and r = 0.353*) and P (r = 0.409** and r = 0.364**) only. Soil P had a significant positive correlation with TSS (r = 0.438**). Soil Fe and Mn had a significant negative correlation with titrable acidity (r = -0.371** and r = -0.292*, respectively). Soil Mn had a significant negative correlation with fruit TSS (r = -0.311*).

Study on Root Characteristics of Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) Genotypes for Moisture Stress

The size and distribution of root system of Sugarcane genotypes in response to moisture stress during formative stage at Agricultural Research Station, Basanthpur, Medak, Telanagana was found significant. Deeper root system as seen in the form of rope roots was observed only with the varieties, Co 95020, Co 87025 and Co 94012 indicating their ability to explore more soil space. The other root parameters viz., shoot to root ratio, root volume, root length and root dry weight were significantly high for Co 95020 and low for Co 8014 categorizing them as drought tolerant and drought susceptible varieties, respectively.

Zinc and Copper Dynamics in the Soil - Plant System in Intensive Strawberry Production

The term heavy metal, when related to its impact on the life of the plant, almost always implies negative connotations. However, some heavy metals like copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are essential to maintain the metabolism of plant, and without them the plant would not be able to successfully complete its life cycle. The aim of this study was to examine the dynamics of Zn and Cu in the soil - plant system in intensive strawberry plantation on pseudogley soil in Northwestern Bosnia, area of Gradacac. The content of Zn and Cu in the examined soil, leaves and fruits of strawberries was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Zn and Cu contents (means +/- SEM) were 82.06 +/- 14.07 and 8.45 +/- 2.35 in soil, 100.34 +/- 4.61 and 0.41 +/- 0.11 in leaves, 91.72 +/- 6.32 and 0.32 +/- 0.18 in fruits expressed as mg/kg dry matter (DW), respectively. Uptake, translocation and accumulation of Zn in the leaves and fruits of strawberries was at a satisfactory level in accordance with the plant’s needs for this element, which was not the case when the dynamics of Cu was studied. Some of the main reasons for that were: a low Cu content in the examined soil, low mobility of Cu in the plant, and antagonistic relationship between Zn and Cu in soil.

Effect of Phosphorus and Bio-fertilizers on Growth and Yield of Urdbean [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper]

A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2014 on loamy sand soil to study the effect of phosphorus levels and bio-fertilizers on growth and yield of urdbean. Experiment consisted of four treatments of phosphorus levels (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg/ha) and four treatments of bio-fertilizers (control, PSB, VAM and PSB + VAM) thereby making sixteen treatment combinations tested in randomized block design with three replications. Result indicated that application of phosphorus up to 40 kg/ha significantly increased the growth and yield determining characters viz., plant height, number of branches/plant, dry matter accumulation/m row length, number and weight of root nodules/plant, CGR, RGR, number of pods/plant, grains/pod, test weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield, harvest index and net returns and its remain at par with 60 kg/ha. Seed and soil inoculation with PSB + VAM significantly enhanced the growth and yield attributing characters over PSB, VAM and control.

Studies on Heterosis for Grain Yield and Its Contributing Characters in Hybrids of Pearl Millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.]

Heterosis for grain yield and its component traits were studied in bajra through line x tester mating design using five lines and eight testers along with two checks, PHB-3 and GHB-558. Heterosis was observed in both directions for most of the characters. Maximum range of standard heterosis was obtained for 1000 grain weight, fodder yield per plot, number of productive tillers per plant, plant height, panicle length, grain yield per plant and panicle diameter. The heterobeltiosis for grain yield per plant ranged from 10.89 to 56.18 per cent, while the standard heterosis ranged from -12.06 to 17.32 per cent. The cross combinations ICMA99666 x PLM1454R, ICMA97111 x PLM15047R and ICMA97444 x PLM15627R had higher grain yield per se ranging from 48.07 (ICMA97444 x PLM15627R) to 48.77 (ICMA99666 x PLM1454R) and recorded significant positive standard heterosis of 17.32, 15.86, 15.80 and 15.62 respectively for gain yield per plant.
